In Vietnam, management of wildlife diseases has garnered attention from both the State and the public. This is evident through a comprehensive system of regulations addressing diseases that can be transmitted from wildlife to humans spanning a range of documents, from laws to decrees and circulars. However, despite these efforts, the practical implementation of wildlife disease management still encounters numerous challenges and shortcomings.
Capacity Building on Benefit Sharing in Forest Carbon Scheme
On October 22, 2020, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development signed an Emission Reduction Payment Agreement (ERPA) with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) to transfer 10.3 million tons of CO2 in 06 provinces in the North Central Region for a total of 51.5 million USD in the period 2018-2025.
The Government issued Decree 107/2022/ND-CP on December 28, 2022, authorizing the pilot implementation of ERPA in six North Central provinces, including Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue.
PanNature collaborated with the Forest Protection and Development Fund of Thua Thien Hue province to organize 02 training courses in Thua Thien Hue province for social organizations and communities (A Roang communes and Huong Nguyen commune, A Luoi district, Thua Thien Hue province and Kim Tien village, Kim Hoa commune, Tuyen Hoa district, Quang Nam province) at the end of 2022 and early 2023.
The workshop attracted 51 community people and approximately 20 social organization representatives, assisting parties in understanding REDD+, lowering carbon emissions, and the ERPA benefit-sharing mechanism.
Furthermore, we trained the community on how to use Locus Map software in forest protection patrols and efficient communication and information-sharing skills, assisting the community in monitoring the ERPA benefit-sharing mechanism.
ERPA revenue helps communities maintain forests and enhance livelihoods by supporting agricultural and forestry extension operations, building welfare projects, and strengthening community capacity.
